Title:
Re-shot: View of White River in South Royalton
- Date:
- 2012-07-25
- Description:
- This color photograph looks southwest over the White River toward the village of South Royalton at the junction of Vermont Routes 14 and 110. The construction of the interstate atop the hill on the far side of the village resulted in the widening of the two state highways and the loss of several buildings along the near side of the river. The re-shot was taken from a hill that rises in the foreground of the image. A Shell gas station with prominent canopy sits at the base of the hill. Route 14 passes along the far side of the Shell station. A reinforced-concrete and steel bridge crosses the river and leads toward the village. Thicker foliage along the river banks obscures much of the village. A church steeple is visible as it rises through the treetops to the left of the road; and several Vermont Law School buildings, including the hallmark cupola of the old schoolhouse (now Debevoise Hall), are clustered to the right of the road. Forested hills rise on the far side of the village. The interstate is just visible along a cleared section of the hillside. The season is summer.

Title:
View of the White River in South Royalton
- Date:
- 1898 - 1903
- Description:
- This hand-colored postcard looks southwest over the White River toward the village of South Royalton. The image was taken from a hill that rises on the near side of the river. A road enters the lower right corner of the image and passes through a covered bridge over the White River. The village, a collection of dwellings, churches, and businesses, is clustered on the far side of the river. Deciduous trees and shrubs grow along the river banks. Hills rise across the background on the far side of the river. A caption at the top of the historic image reads, "The Old Wooden Bridge, So. Royalton, Vt." The season appears to be summer. Ralph G. Eddy writes: The covered bridge was replaced in 1903. There are very well-defined river terraces in the background.
