Centennial Field
Town:
Burlington
County:
Chittenden
State:
Vermont
Date:
2005-06-27
Description:
The more recent photograph shows a chalked out baseball diamond put down upon a maintained clay surface in the middle of a lush green field. While there are no players on the field, numerous people are on the left of the photograph walking around the bleachers. Because there is no game in progress home plate and the pitching mound have been covered to protect them from the elements. Surrounding the baseball field are large lights, which allow the players to play during the evening. While the bleachers in the background remain empty, they have now been transformed in to an advertising space for the franchise. The homes that once surrounded the field have now been covered or obscured by new tree growth, which remains a dominant feature in the background today. Other changes include large utility poles and a chain link fence that runs down the left side of the field. The season is summer. This historic photograph shows a group of men playing baseball at Centennial Field at the University of Vermont. One player is up at bat, while another is on deck in the batters box. On the side of the field (to the right), a line of bats is strewn about the ground. To the left of the diamond are the stands, where numerous fans are cheering for the home team. The bleachers into the background appear empty. Surrounding Centennial Field are numerous wood framed dwellings, and large deciduous trees. A wide earthen road wraps around the field passing in front of the stands and around the field.
