Title:
50 Years after the UVM Farm Fire
Town:
Burlington
County:
Chittenden
State:
Vermont
Date:
2008-05-07
Description:
The former Agricultural buildings once stood on top of the hill across Main Street from the Living and Learning complex. Following this fire most of the buildings on the farm were torn down and the farm was relocated to its current location on Spear Street. Today the former farm has become one of the many parking lots used by UVM for faculty staff and students. The parking lot is currently full of cars as this photo was taken during the middle of a weekday. The road in the foreground leads into the parking lot from Main Street and was actually one of the original entrances to the farm. Lamp posts have been added throughout the parking lot and deciduous trees have been planted along the parking lot borders. These trees are approaching bloom showing that the season is late spring. In the background on the left we can see the site used for UVM's CATS transportation buses. Behind them we can just make out the new wind mill and Mt. Mansfield and Camel's Hump are visible in the distance.

After the UVM Farm Fire
Town:
Burlington
County:
Chittenden
State:
Vermont
Date:
1950 - 1960
Description:
This historic photograph documents the aftermath of the University of Vermont Farm Fire. Standing on ladders beside the barn, firemen and a farmer continue to fight the fire inside the UVM barn. The structure appears upright, however the entire roof and second floor has been destroyed, as well as much of the building's rear. In the foreground is the barn courtyard, filled with ashes and small pieces of fire debris. Growing against the barn is a small shrub. Curious onlookers are in the corner of the photograph. The season is autumn. For more information on UVM or UVM buildings check out www.uvm.edu/campus
