Relics of Furnace

Title:
Relics of Furnace
Town:
Vershire
County:
Orange
State:
Vermont
Date:
1906-10-10
Description:
This historic photograph documents the Ely Mine in Vershire, Vermont in 1877. In the foreground, a barren hillside leads down to the bottom of a large retaining wall. The hillside is littered with large rocks, sediment, and small shrubs. Sitting upon the terrace created by the retaining wall is the large smelting shed and furnace that appears to be abandoned. To the left of the smelting shed are other mine buildings, which also appear abandoned. Numerous piles of mine waste, industrial equipment, and pieces of the abandoned building are scattered throughout the yard surrounding the smelting shed. The side sheathing on most of the building appears to have been removed, and it appears as though floors have collapsed in more than one location. The hills surrounding the mine appear partially forested with a mix of conifer and deciduous tree species. Mountains can be seen in the background. season fall
