Norcross West Marble Company in Manchester
1910 - 1940
This black and white photograph captures the Norcross West Marble Company in Manchester. A narrow dirt road enters the foreground of the image and passes over a set of railroad tracks that cut from left to right across the center of the image. A wooden railroad crossing sign is posted alongside the tracks, and wooden utility poles line the tracks. The large, sprawling factory complex spreads out along the opposite side of the tracks. The wood-frame factory is topped with a gable roof and features banks of large, multi-light windows. A smokestack rises from the complex and billows smoke. A signboard with the name of the company is posted along the front of the building. Large piles of cut stone have been amassed at the left end of the building. Shrubs grow along the foundation of the building and along the tracks. Leafy deciduous trees grow along the road. Mountains rise in the distance. The leafy foliage suggests the season is summer. This photograph was taken by a photographer for the Eastern Illustrating & Publishing Co. and contributed to the Landscape Change Program by the Penobscot Marine Museum, located in Searsport, ME. Eastern Illustrating was a postcard company located in Belfast, ME that took thousands of photographs throughout New England and upstate New York from 1909 through the 1950s.
