Women's Hairstyles

Women's hairstyles in the 1870s become less tidy and conservative.

During the early 1870s, women's hair was worn close to the sides of the head and high on top. "Careless" locks were also fashionable during the early 70s. Soft tendrils fell around the face and waves and curls hung behind a large, loose topknot that was held in place with a elaborate combs. Short, frizzed bangs suddenly gained popularity in 1876. The late 1870s are characterized by an extreme upsweep of hair. Notice the short, frizzed bangs of the two women in the top images. The woman on the top left also has the loose topknot. The women in the bottom image sport a variety of long, more "careless" hairdos.
