1940s
WWII had a significant impact of the clothing industry. War rationing, particularly in Britain, required 85% of materials to be used for "utility" clothing, which needed to be practical, long-lasting, everyday work clothing that did not use any unnecessary material or adornments. Although quite restrictive, the resulting outfits became quite fashionable such that much of the non-utility clothing, and clothing produced in the United States, closely followed the designs of the utility wear. Nonetheless, the end of the war ushered in new, more elegant styles that were quickly embraced by the American public. The mass-production of uniforms during the war, as well as the challenges of producing the durable utility wear, honed the clothing industry's skill in manufacturing better, long-lasting garments with paired down trim and detail.
