Residential Architecture

Virtually all residential buildings, no matter how modest, reflect the architectural fashions or buildings trends of their era. As well, many houses tend to change over time - new siding, new windows, or a new porch. When examining historic images, these changes can be helpful in narrowing a date. For example, a building constructed in 1840 may have received new windows in 1900. By identifying the style of the new windows, one can further narrow the date from post-1840 to post-1900. Therefore, it is important to examine every character-defining feature of a building style and the methods of construction popular during each era. After identifying the original building style, try to determine the date of the most recent changes, if any.
