Over one hundred years ago, when Americans first took to the roads in their automobiles, signs were scarce and many roads unmapped. It was at the motorists own risk that he or she trekked out onto the open road. The first half of the 20th century marked a significant era in road construction, traffic regulations, and the standardization of signage.
