Following is a brief history of the streetcar companies in Vermont's major cities.

Brattleboro

1895-1925: Brattleboro Street Railway operated an electric streetcar line

Burlington

1872-1893: Winooski & Burlington Horse Railroad Company operated a horse-drawn streetcar line

1893-1928: Burlington Traction Company operated an electric streetcar line; at the end of the service in 1928, the last trolley car was burned in the center of downtown Burlington during an "Abandonment Celebration"

1928-1973: Burlington Rapid Transit Company operated a public bus service

Montpelier/Barre

1890s-1925: Barre & Montpelier Traction Company operated an electric streetcar line

1925-1927: Vergennes Power Company took over the streetcar line

Rutland

1872-1890s: Rutland Street Railway Company operated a horse-drawn streetcar line

1890s-1906: Rutland Street Railway Company operated an electric streetcar line

1906-1924: Rutland Railway Light & Power Company took over the streetcar line

After 1924: Rutland Bus Company operated a public bus service

St. Albans

1904-1912: St. Albans Street Railway operated an electric streetcar line

1912-1921: St. Albans & Swanton Traction Company took over the streetcar line
