Description:
The historic image shows a covered, wooden bridge with a cement abutment in the middle of the river. The bridge, known as the Heineberg Bridge, was located between the City of Burlington and the Town of Colchester. A wooden fence lines the road on the far side of the bridge. The riparian zone appears partially forested. Erosion of the far riverbank is visible underneath the bridge. The bridge was damaged by high water in February of 1935 (LS01503) and dismantled in February of 1937 (LS01506). For a view of the opening ceremony of the new, metal bridge built at the same sight see LS01515. Esther Munroe Swift writes on 2005-5-25: Prof. Robert McCullough University of Vermont Historic Preservation Program writes: "The Heineberg Bridge, Winooski River, Colchester Point, Vermont. It was built by Henry R. Campbell, Engineer. Constructed 1860. The Heineberg Bridge opened in 1860, three hundred feet in two spans, and remained in service until 1935." He does not explain the origin of the name. And the bridge does not appear in any published works about covered bridges that I have found. One can see the sequence in which the images were taken: Image LS01480 shows bridge with high vertical siding over the wooden truss frame (with no date shown). LS01503 shows the wooden truss frame with half-high siding after it's damage (dated on the print Feb. 16, 1935); and LS01506 shows the bridge without siding as it was being dismantled (dated on the print Feb. 9, 1937. And LS01515 is dated Jan. 1, 1937.
