Alburg-Rouses Point Bridge

Title:
Alburg-Rouses Point Bridge
Town:
Alburg
County:
Grand Isle
State:
Vermont
Date:
1987-04
Description:
This photo was taken of the construction of the new Alburg-Rouses Point Bridge across Lake Champlain. The photo shows the construction of one of the 28 piers in the lake. There is a concrete pump truck on a barge in the foreground pumping concrete into a cofferdam for one of the channel piers. In the background there are two cranes on barges preparing to erect a steel girder between two of the piers. Notice how much ice there is on the lake. The old bridge is to the left side of the photo. The new bridge is 60 feet above the lake in the channel span and allows for most boats to pass. The lake depth is approximately 25 feet in the channel span. Construction of this bridge began in June 1985 and the bridge was completed and opened to traffic on September 22, 1987. The old bridge was then removed in 1988. A few constructions workers can be seen in this image wearing hardhats. Across the lake, a forested shoreline is visible.
