Title:
"Old 494" on the Streets of Hartford
- Date:
- 1957
- Description:
- In this image, a steam-powered engine, known as "Old 494," is being moved through the streets of Hartford. The engine is on a specially designed cart with ties and rails on the bed. The cart has writing that reads "[Obscured] Giddings, [Obscured] Heavy Hauling". The truck pulling the cart cannot be seen. A man is standing in the foreground of the image, directly behind him the front of a car can be seen. The road on which the train is moving is unpaved in this area. On the right of the image, there are several automobiles and men as well as a building with a gable roof. On the left of the image, the corner of a grand, two-story brick building is visible (the Municipal Building?). In the background, multiple deciduous and coniferous trees are visible. It appears to be late spring. John Adams writes on 2013-09-10: This locomotive is now at the current train station near the courthouse near downtown White River Jct. Giddings the trucking company which originated in North Springfield and went out of business over 30 years ago was one of my earlier employers back in the day. In 1959 they moved a covered bridge in Perkinsville. I recall seeing the photo of them crossing the Black River Rte. 106 in some photo.
