Title:
Lake View at Highgate Springs
- Date:
- 1910 - 1940
- Description:
- This black and white photograph captures a lake view at Highgate Springs. The lake spreads out across the foreground of the image. Small ripples cover the surface of the lake. Several cabins, a few boathouses, and what appears to be a hotel, are nestled in deciduous trees along the far shore. The boathouses are small, wood-frame structures with gable roofs. Piers jut out into the water alongside a few of the boathouses. The cabins range from modest to large in size. All are wood-frame structures with gable roofs and one or more porches. The building that appears to be a hotel is located toward the left end of the group. The large building is three stories in height and has a gable roof and several porches. The leafy foliage suggests a summer season. This photograph was taken by a photographer for the Eastern Illustrating & Publishing Co. and contributed to the Landscape Change Program by the Penobscot Marine Museum, located in Searsport, ME. Eastern Illustrating was a postcard company located in Belfast, ME that took thousands of photographs throughout New England and upstate New York between 1909 and the 1950s.
