This historic photograph documents an open pit at the Elizabeth Mine in Strafford, VT. In the foreground, a large trench has been excavated out of the side of a large bedrock exposure. While the bottom and sides of this trench are filled with some talus, the majority of the trench remains clear of debris. At the far end of the trench appears to be a wooden retaining wall. What this wall is retaining is unknown. The tips of some conifer trees can be seen above the outcrop on the right. season summer.
