Title:
Abiel Blanchard House and Barn
- Date:
- 1870 - 1890
- Description:
- This historic stereoview captures the Abiel Blanchard House in the village of Peacham. Nine men, women, and children, likely an extended family, pose on the lawn in front of a large, two-story, wood-frame dwelling. The 1789 house was constructed in the Federal style, recognizable by the symmetrical, five-bay façade and hipped roof. This common late 18th - early 19th century style often displays lavish architectural details; however, the simplistic, vernacular appearance of the house in this image indicates a family of more modest means. A smaller, one-story wing and barn extend off the rear of the main house. Multi-paned, twelve-over-eight windows, common to this early time period, open into the façade of the main house, and a brick chimney rises from the center of the roof. The front yard is penned in by a crude wooden fence that has a crooked gate at the rear. Several young, leafy deciduous trees are scattered in the front yard. A man sits atop the fence, and two women and a young child sit in the grass beside the fence. Two men and two children stand alongside the house. One man sits atop a horse. All are dressed in clothing typical of a late-19th century working family. The season is likely summer, as the deciduous trees are filled with leaves. The Abiel Blanchard House is now located in School District One, within the Peacham Corner Historic District.
