Title:
Childs Tavern in Wilmington
- Date:
- 1910 - 1920
- Description:
- This black and white photograph captures Childs Tavern in Wilmington. The tavern, which is sited at the center of the image and faces slightly off to the right, is a sprawling, three-story, gambrel-roof, wood-frame building that is covered with wood shingles and boasts a wrapping, columned porch. An iron fire-escape and a brick chimney are attached to the left side of the building. A manicured lawn spreads out along the front of the building. A concrete sidewalk defines the front edge of the lawn, and two walkways lead from the sidewalk up to the front porch. A young, leafless deciduous tree grows on the front lawn. A young girl stands on the sidewalk at the front of the building. Utility wires are faintly visible passing across the foreground of the image. Due to the fact that the tree has no leaves and that there is no snow on the ground, it appears that the season is either fall or early spring. This photograph was taken by a photographer for the Eastern Illustrating & Publishing Co. and contributed to the Landscape Change Program by the Penobscot Marine Museum, located in Searsport, ME. Eastern Illustrating was a postcard company located in Belfast, ME that took thousands of photographs throughout New England and upstate New York between 1909 and the 1950s.
