Title:
Bird's Eye View of Westfield
- Date:
- 1907?
- Description:
- Image shows view of town with steep pasture in the foreground, town with residences and a church in the middle ground, and forested hills in the hazy distance. The church and 'prominent house' from LS02002 are visible in this photo. There is a stream with what looks like a mill dam and mill on the left. Then what may be a landing for logging below. In the center are stacks of cut lumber and a smokestack. This is winter as the elm trees have no leaves. There are several connected farm buildings in the wide valley along with dirt roads. This postcard was dated July 1, 1907 and sent July 2, 1907. Esther Munroe Swift notes on 2004-12-28: Note: The postmark says Windsor Mills QUE. Esther Munroe Swift writes on 2006-3-14: The town of Westfield has an interesting historical origin. In 1780 The Continental Congress was refusing to admit Vermont to the Union & would supply neither money nor supplies for the Vermont troops. So the legislature came up with a plan for raising money by establishing six towns and putting them up for sale. The grantees of Enosburg & Westfield paid their fees on 15 May 1780. Thereby adding almost 1000 pounds to the state treasury. Colonial American was still using the British terms for money: Pounds, Shillings & Pence.
