Description:: This is a photograph of Benjamin Carpenter’s gravestone in the Carpenter Cemetery, on Carpenter Hill Road, Guildford, Vermont. The gravestone has three lines on either side, and two small, symmetrically curved arches with engraved rosettes. The center of the stone is an urn with a weeping willow. Two half sunbursts frame either side of the urn. The stone reads: Sacred to the memory of The Hon. Benj. Carpenter, Esq. Born in Rehobeth, Mass. A.D, 1726 A Magistrate in Rhode Island in 1774 A Public Teacher of Righteousness. An able Advocate to his last for Democracy, And the equal rights of man. Removed to this Town in A.D. 1770 Was a field Officer in the Revolutionary War. A founder of the first Constitution and Gov’ of Vermont A Councillor of Censors in A.D. 1783 A member of the Council, and Lieut. Gov’ Of the State in A.D. 1779 A firm professor of Christianity in the Baptist Church 50 years. Left this world and 146 persons of lineal posterity, March 29, 1804. Aged 78 years, 10 month 12 days. With a strong mind and full faith of a more Glorious State hereafter Stature about six feet…Wt 200 Death had no terror.
