Title:
University Place from southwest of green
- Date:
- 1893
- Description:
- This is a pair of images showing the buildings along University Place from the southwest of the main green at UVM. This historical image is from the spring of 1893 and through the leafless trees we can see the Old Mill with its many roofs and Belfry steeple. To the left of this we can see the old Billings library with its round turret and beyond that is the old residence of the President of UVM. In front of this, within the green, is the statue of Ira Allen standing on its stone platform. Winding through the center of the picture is a gravel walking path on which stands a young man in long pants and jacket. There seem to be smaller non-gravel (informal dirt) paths cutting through the green toward the Old Mill. The man stands between two large trees but there are many smaller trees filling the whole of the green. There are also smaller bushes and conifer trees dispersed throughout the green. Loona Brogan writes on 2005-9-8 that you can see in LS00064 that the statue is Lafayette, from the walking posture of his statue and the fluting of the pedestal. He was moved and Ira Allen's statue was put there at some later date.
