Construction of Ira Allen (Southern View)

Date:: 1926
Description:: This historic photograph documents a partially constructed Ira Allen Chapel in 1926. In this photograph, Ira Allen Chapel is framed in wood staging, from which workers are busy pointing and laying brick. Most of the walls and window framing appears completed in this photograph, and it appears that most of the work done at this time is focused on finishing the roof. A few construction workers are on the roof, and they appear to be cutting and fixing boards on to the building. Around the base of Ira Allen Chapel the ground is littered with large and small construction debris, most of which appears to consist of wooden framing, and various pieces of metal bracing. Adjacent to the building is a small construction shed, which appears rather derelict, and ill maintained. On the top of the low hill (to the left of the building) the corner of the Billings Library can be seen. This building is composed of a metamorphic red quartzite, and is located on University Place. Behind the Chapel to the left, is a small grove of mixed species forest. Some trees appear devoid of leaves suggesting the season is late autumn. UVM Campus
