"What Say, Ira?"

Description:: This historic photograph documents the University of Vermont mascot posing with the statue of Ira Allen. The mascot is standing on the statue's granite steps, dressed in a catamount outfit (fur coat, headpiece, gloves, and pants) holding what appears to be a UVM victory flag. Behind the statue, various deciduous trees (mostly large elms) can be seen. If one looks very hard through the trees they can make out the outline of Old Mill, which is a high Victorian Gothic style building, with numerous windows and a large bell tower. The inscription on Ira Allen's Pedestal reads, "Ira Allen, Founder of the State of Vermont, Founded this University 1791." Season autumn, UVM campus. Loona Brogan writes on 2006-10-18: In the old photo, the majestic elms can be seen towering in the background behind the more shrubby trees behind the statue. I'd estimate that these are the same trees we see growing there now, almost fifty years later. Serviceberry don't grow to be very big-- they border on being considered a shrub due to their size.
