Sicilian Workers Building the Railroad in Gaysville

Description:: This historic photograph was taken during the construction of the White River Railroad that was a Short Haul Railroad of Vermont (Syracuse 1953). The workers are Sicilian who came to build the railroad and lived in a small camp nearby (Pierce, Robert F -- Norwich University). A dirt road diverges to cross the hill slope in two places. There are large boulders and glacial till within the hill slope, which we can see on the left side of the picture. The bank of the river can also be seen on the very lower left corner of the image. There are wheelbarrows and horse-drawn wagons being used by the Sicilian workers. Wooden poles rise up from where the two roads split and have utility wires attached. The side of the hill slope is heavily eroded with several small slides of soil. The season is most likely summer.
