Break Room

Title:
Break Room
Town:
Strafford
County:
Orange
State:
Vermont
Date:
2007-04
Description:
This photo shows a spelunker outside a break room, 300 ft. down in the Elizabeth Mine of Strafford. The break room is made of wooden planks with a rusted steel door falling off its hinges as the mine has not been operated since 1958. A red sign on the door reads "DANGER". The solid rock roof of the tunnel is visible in the flash from the camera, rusted iron support bars are visible poking down through the rock. Because the mine has not been operated in 50 years water has accumulated throughout the mine and is visible in the lower left of the picture. Here it is only about knee deep. The original photograph was taken while the mine was in operation from inside the break room. There does not appear to be a door to the break room in the old photo or perhaps it is open and cannot be seen. The massive pipe visible in the original picture is just out of sight to the right of the present photo.
