Blast Furnace, Elizabeth Mine

Description:: Writing on the back of the historic photograph reads, "Much larger furnaces with capacities of 300-400 tons were a feature of the August Hechscher and George Westinghouse attempts to work the Orange County Mines. This picture shows Heckscher's big blast furnace under construction at south Strafford about 1907. Westinghouse installed comparable equipment at Ely." In the foreground, a group of three men take a break as they install a large blast furnace at the Elizabeth Mine in Strafford, VT. The men stand upon timber cribbing, which is used to support the mass of the large furnace. Each of the men wears a hat, and all appear dressed in work clothes. Wooden timbers, and four large "I" beams, which are attached to each corner of the furnace currently, support the furnace. There appears to be a roof over the furnace in this photograph, however this roof may be only a temporary structure until the workers complete the furnaces base. The glow on the right side of the photograph suggests the building does not have any walls. season unknown
