Title:
Moving Marble at Mill #19, Rutland
- Date:
- 1923
- Description:
- This photograph depicts the movement of large marble blocks at Mill #19 in Rutland, part of the Vermont Marble Company. The side of the mill runs the entire length of the photograph. There is a large steel track alongside the mill that is equal height with the roof of the building. A large steel machine carriage spans the track, able to move forward and back. A pulley system as part of the steel machine carriage is able to lift the marble blocks as well as move them laterally. The machine carriage operator stands in a small hanging cab on its far side, nearest the side of the building. The ground level of the mill is a series of successive garage entryways, large enough for the marble blocks to be moved in and out. Most of the marble blocks pictured are set on wheeled platforms. Utility lines are visible on the roof of the mill. The lower level of the mill is made of brick, while the upper level appears to consist of many multi-paned windows.
