On Browns River down stream from old saw mill on Old Pump Rd

Title:
Browns River Reforested
Town:
Jericho
County:
Chittenden
State:
Vermont
Date:
2001
Description:
The recent photograph also shows the Browns River. There is a lot of outcrop visible in the river. The riparian zone has reforested. Jeff Ojala, a student at Mount Mansfield Union High School, wrote the following commentary on the two images: The photographs that I have collected and taken with a digital camera show the great degree of change on the landscape of a small Vermont town caused by human influence over the past 90 years. The original photograph was taken in the early spring of 1913. The photograph was taken from a farmer's field (now a wooded forest) looking down on the Browns River. The banks have eroded because of deforestation, pollution and the construction of surrounding houses (not seen in the picture, behind trees). Due to the cutting of trees around the time that the older picture was taken, the soil was weakened and was washed away from years of use and natural causes such as rainfall and winds. As the soil has been washed away, the river bend has changed direction slightly due to rock formations that were exposed. One positive change that has occurred is the growth of trees in and around the riverbanks. Around the time of the original photograph the lands of Vermont were barren compared to today because of the mass cutting of trees for lumber, farming, housing and grazing lands for animals such as sheep.
