East Hall Construction
Town:
Burlington
County:
Chittenden
State:
Vermont
Date:
1946?
Description:
This historic photograph was taken of the construction of East Hall about 1946 facing southwest. In the foreground are large wooden pallets and a large metal container covered with snow. One of the wooden pallets has "Extra" painted on its side. There are piles of stone blocks on the left and men stand next to tarp covered piles of stone on in the middle. One man is pushing a wheel barrow and another is cutting stone. Behind the back of the man cutting stone is a pile of dirt covered with snow. There appear to be broken pieces of wood and machinery in the pile also. The western part of the building on the right is more complete than on the left where the men are constructing the stone foundation. The wing on the right has walls and a roof. The second wing from the right has walls and a partial roof. The wing second from the left has walls and there are men working on the roof. The walls of the wing on the left are being assembled as the foundation for the northeast corner is being laid. East Hall is a one story white wooden structure. Beyond the construction site is an open space with wooden poles along shoveled walkways. On the right there is a basketball court with a chain link fence behind the posts. Beyond the open space, in the middle of the photograph, the Royall Tyler Theater is visible. It is a stone structure in two sections. The front section is two stories and the back section is one story; both sections have large arched windows. There are chimneys on the side and back of the theater. Behind the building there are cars parked in a small parking lot. In the distance on the left there are dwellings visible as well as a water tower. On the right side of the photograph the back of Old Mill is visible. The brick structure if four stories tall with a square white cupola on the roof over the center section of the building. The corner and a chimney of the Williams Building is on the right of the photograph. Elm trees dot the open spaces and are visible in the distance among the houses. Past the houses there is a forest of deciduous and conifer trees.
