Title:
View of Lake Champlain from Battery Park
- Date:
- 2008-03-14
- Description:
- Image shows snow-covered lawn, tree, bench, fence and Lake Champlain.
Brandon Dickerman writes on 2008-12-29:
This image of Battery Park and the view to the south, southwest looking down Lake Champlain contains many geologic and human elements. In the foreground, is the park which is covered in snow which makes it clear that it is winter. There is a large tree present in the center of the image whose shadow suggests that the photograph was probably taken around noon. There are two individuals that are sitting or leaning against the stone wall and metal fence at the edge of the park. In the park are two benches and a sign that are on the edge of the path. On the lake there is a lighthouse that is located out on the breakwater which is surrounded by ice. On the far right of the image in the background the silhouettes of the Adirondack Mountains in New York State.

Title:
View of Lake Champlain from Battery Park
- Date:
- 1940 - 1945
- Description:
- This historic hand-colored postcard is a view of Lake Champlain from Battery Park. There is a dirt road in the foreground with an automobile parked along the side of it. In front of the road is a grassy area with two large elm trees. On the opposite side of the road is small grassy section with two more elm trees and a worn footpath that crosses it to the left side of the image. A bench sits on this grassy patch in the center of the image. Another dirt path crosses the image in front of the bench. The path splits and there are guardrails to the right side of the image. Past this point in the image there is a steep hill that is not visible, but the roof of a building is visible to the left. Some other white wooden-frame buildings are down by the waterfront, including the boathouse the left and the docked cruise ship. Lake Champlain extends out into the image, and the Adirondack Mountains of New York are visible in the background. The season is summer.
