Alburg-Rouses Point Bridge

Title:
Alburg-Rouses Point Bridge
Town:
Alburg
County:
Grand Isle
State:
Vermont
Date:
1985-10
Description:
This aerial photo was taken during construction of the new Alburg-Rouses Point Bridge on US Route 2 between Alburg, VT and Rouses Point, NY. The photo shows the construction of the approach piers on the New York end of the bridge across Lake Champlain. The construction began in June 1985 on the New York end of the bridge and this photo was taken in October of 1985. Notice the large barges that were used for accessing the pier construction. The barges were tied end to end to allow concrete mixers and cranes to access the pier construction. Notice the tollbooth in the center of the roadway approach to the old bridge. The tolls were abolished when the new bridge was opened to traffic in September of 1987. The old bridge was removed in 1988. Along the shoreline trees and grass are visible. There are several boats and some structures near the lake’s edge in the upper left corner of the image.
