Moving a Locomotive through Hartford

Date:: 1957
Description:: In this image, a steam-powered engine, known as "Old 494," is being moved through the streets of Hartford. The engine is on a specially designed cart with ties and rails on the bed. The cart has writing that reads "J.M. Giddings, Industrial, Heavy Hauling". The truck pulling the cart cannot be seen. Several men are standing next to the engine. On the side of the street in the foreground of the image, multiple cars and trucks are parked and an area of grass is also visible. Across the street, there is a brick building with a gable roof, although it is almost entirely obscured by the engine. On the right of the image, There is a cross street, another car, a smaller brick building with two men standing outside, and a sign that reads "Red & Wh[rest of word cannot be read] Food Stor[rest of word cannot be read]." In the background, multiple deciduous and coniferous trees are visible. It appears to be spring. Note utility lines. Allen Hill writes on 2009-01-11: This image was made in 1957, some time before Image LS13551_000, which see for more information on the locomotive's history. Note that the main rods (between cylinders and front drive wheels) have been removed for transportation.
